The Bhima Koregaon Case

There is a river called Bhima on the banks of which stands a village Koregaon in Pune District.

This was the site of a conflict between the mighty army of Peshwa Bajirao II and the British Army. What made this war significant was the fact that Mahars (an untouchable caste) aligned with the British Army and a handful of them defeated the mighty army of Peshwa. The Mahars, numbering around 500 defeated the 25,000 strong army of Peshwa. The Mahars had been refused jobs as soldiers by the Peshwa and they were upset with this.

In memory of Mahars killed in the battle the British built a war memorial. The Dalits see this war memorial as a sign of victory of Dalits over the caste system. Every year on 1st January, they make a trip to the memorial and celebrate the victory. 2018 was the year when the epic battle was going to celebrate 200 years of passage. But the upper caste had other plans. Terrible violence was unleashed on 1st January 2018 that led to complete break down of law and order and many people who had come to the site got injured while one youth lost his life.

The congregation was organized by an organization called the Elgar Parishad.

Later on 16 people were arrested by Pune Police for plotting and planning to create disturbance in the area and for planning to murder Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pune Police arrested these 16 people based on evidence recovered from their computers and other electronic devices.

The defense of these 16 approached computer forensic experts to study the evidence. Some top notch forensic experts and companies came to the conclusion that the evidence had been planted on the computer of one of the 16 and was later transmitted to other computers using the infected computer without the knowledge of the person. And these experts found that the IP address used for this transmission tied to Pune Police. Further investigation by them proved conclusively, with evidence, that a Pune based policeman was directly responsible for hacking the email account of the main victim and used the access to plant evidence on the computer of other accused. This revelation was made in the ‘Wired’ magazine, which is one of the most credible magazine as far as Information Technology is concerned.

Yet, courts have still to take notice of this revelation. The ‘Godi’ media has suppressed this news. The accused are still in jail and the policeman is having a free run.
