Washington -US President Donald Trump has worn a mask in public for the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, during his visit to the Walter Reed military hospital outside Washington on Saturday.
President Trump met wounded soldiers and health care workers on the occasion. The mask worn by him had the presidential seal emblazoned on the side.
He had previously mocked Democratic rival Joe Biden for wearing a mask and had said that he would not wear a mask.
“I think when you’re in a hospital, especially in that particular setting, where you’re talking to a lot of soldiers and people that, in some cases, just got off the operating tables, I think it’s a great thing to wear a mask,” said Trump.
Trump was seen without a mask at news conferences, coronavirus task force updates, rallies and other public events. Even he is to ridicule those wearing mask. His rally was attended by thousands people without wearing mask. They all cheered up for not wearing mask.
The change of tone came after months of refusing to don the medical expert-recommended face coverings, as US recorded 66,528 coronavirus cases on Saturday. As of today, there are 33,55,895 corona cases and 1,37,405 covid deaths.
In recent weeks, several people working in proximity to the president have tested positive for coronavirus. His son Donald Jr’s girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, tested positive for Covid-19 before Trump’s rally at Mount Rushmore on 3 July, and the couple had to go into quarantine.
