Mumbai–In the last seven years during 2013 to 2019, total 3945 buildings have collapsed in Mumbai, killing 300 people and injuring 1146 others.Last year, 622 incidents of building collapse or part collapse took place. In this 51 people died and 227 persons were injured, revealed in an RTI filed by Shakil Shaikh. He was speaking with Indjournals on the backdrop of Bhanushali building collapse in Mumbai on Wednesday which killed at least two people.
“MAHDA and BMC Keep accusing each other washing off their responsibilities from the dilapidated buildings. Both organization deny to take action on the people responsible for such incidents” said Shakil Shaikh who is also an RTI activist.”Bombay High Court after hearing petition ordered MHADA and BMC to do structural audit of dilapidated buildings and classify them into c1 and c2 categories before monsoon. Court also asked them to update list on there website. But the Bhanushali building which collapsed today was not on this list. Then how the building collapsed? BMC is responsible for this as it is their primary duty,” blamed Shaikh. “MHADA do not have proper administrative machinery to vacate dilapdated buldings but BMC have machinery and powers to cut water , electricity of building. Therefore it’s BMC responsibility to vacate dilapidated buildings,” he stressed.
